A brief history and an in-depth evaluation of dance education in the United States is presented. Included in the discussion are; what makes an effective dance teacher, the need for a documented study on the benefits of dance and arts education, and the current modes of instruction.
This is an important time for education in the United States. The American people are tuned in to education and have made it one of their highest priorities. We have more children than ever before in our nation's schools, and we will be breaking enrollment records for the next ten years. It is critical that professional associations like the National Dance Education Association (NDEA) support educators, administrators, students, and parents in meeting the education challenges of the twenty-first century. Established in December 1997, the NDEA(1) is an autonomous, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting standards of excellence in dance education. It provides to the dance student, artist, and educator a network of resources and support through advocacy, programs, and projects that focus on the importance of dance in the human experience. I have been the executive director of the NDEA since September 1998. |
